THE QUIZ LADY

Quiz Lady is an unexpectedly thoughtful comedy that balances sometimes zany humor with an emotional undercurrent of sisterhood. At its center is Awkwafina’s Anne, a withdrawn accountant whose life is reduced to the nightly ritual of watching Can’t Stop the Quiz, a long‑running trivia TV show she has secretly mastered since childhood. Jenny (Sandra Oh), her estranged sister, reenters her life and pressures Anne to audition for the show in a desperate attempt to resolve their mother’s lingering debts. The plot is familiar, yet Quiz Lady the film stands out mainly due to the nutty comedic behavior of Sandra Oh’s character Jenny and the attempt to explore the bonds of a fractured family.

The contrast between the sisters is the film’s strongest attribute. Anne’s anxious restraint and Jenny’s chaotic behavior create a dynamic that feels both comedic and authentic, revealing the ways siblings can drive each other crazy. Awkwafina delivers her most grounded performance since The Farewell in 2019. Her character Anne starts with a quiet weakness that makes her gradual rise of confidence predictable, but interesting.

The supporting cast have limited screen time, but their time is effective. Will Ferrell personifies the warm and friendly, decades‑experienced quiz‑show host with precision. Jason Schwartzman’s, the reigning champion, is instantly objectionable. His smugness heightens the film’s competitive tension. Holland Taylor appears as Anne’s neighbor, offering moments of levity, though her role remains peripheral and nonessential.

The film’s tone blends sentimentality and light absurdity, to ultimately presenting a story about sisterhood and personal growth. While Quiz Lady is unlikely to enter awards conversations, it succeeds as a warm, engaging comedy anchored by two finely tuned performances. If you appreciate either lead actor, the film offers a satisfying and well‑crafted experience.
