DISOBEDIENCE

In Disobedience, it takes a while to understand the real problem plaguing this “once we were best friends” trio, but when you get there, the movie beautifully and heartbreakingly intertwines faith in God (“Word Hashem [God] is my life”), freedom, and choice. Rachel Weisz (The Lobster) as Ronit, estranged from her Rabbi father’s Othodox Jewish community outside of London, returns for his funeral. Rachel McAdams as Esti, now married to Dovid (Alessandro Nivola) – the future Rabbi – completes the best friend trio.

Ronit and Esti instantly rekindle their love for each other and the struggle between love, faith, and the life you were born into versus the life you want, begins to unfold. Excellent story based upon a 2007 novel by Naomi Alderman – the two Rachels are incredible. When the Rachels are together the scenes are beautiful and/or heartbreaking and their sensual love scene is notable and definitely qualifies the movie for a mature themed R+ rating.  Some Yiddish spoken, Rachel McAdams wears a sheitel (wig) and a body suit, an Orthodox custom, and “May you live a long life” is often spoken. A serious and emotional movie worth watching.
