Freaks: You’re One of Us
Freaks: You’re One of Us is a German superhero movie released by Netflix on September 2, 2020. It seems like Freaks is Germany’s first step at creating a German superhero universe. At this point, Freaks: You’re One of Us is slightly entertaining, and a quick Netflix watch but do not expect anything approaching the Marvel or DC Cinematic universes.
The star Wendy (Cornelia Gröschel), is a loving Mom and spouse working in fast food. A homeless man, Marek (Wotan Wilke Möhring), gives her the idea to stop taking the blue pills she takes to control her mental issues. When she stops, she learns she has superhero strength. Wendy persuades her co-worker Elmar (Tim Oliver Schultz) to stop his blue pills. Soon Elmar renames himself Electro Man. They soon learn there are others like them.
Freaks: You’re One of Us is toned down to emphasize that normal, boring, people with lots of problems may have additional strengths. It unfolds a subplot of repression by the government and shows what can happen to someone who receives superpowers.
The writing is acceptable (the characters do not say anything too stupid), and the dialogue and subtitles are not too complicated. The plot moves quickly, keeping your interest.
However, Marvel superhero movies have programmed humankind to expect good superheroes to fight evil superheroes. Colossal CGI effects and sarcastic humor is the norm. For example, in Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, the superheroes are fighting an invincible titan, Thanos. The superheroes are losing. Yet, the superheroes are always making sarcastic jokes, and they use the best in the world CGI effects. Freaks: You’re One of Us has none of this.

There is no humor in Freaks. All the characters remain somber, and the overall tone tends toward sad. Wendy is likable but aloof. All the other characters are not pleasant nor affable. Freaks speeds through the ending showing hints of what may come next.
Freaks: You’re One of Us also uses a trick from Marvel’s universe. At the very end of the final credits, there is a teaser that makes you smile. Freaks: You’re One of Us may be the first of many German superhero movies. The film is slightly entertaining, but if you compare Freaks to the Marvel movies, you will be disappointed. Just watch the film and be proud you watched a movie with subtitles.
