Mother’s Little Helpers

MOTHER’S LITTLE HELPERS

Mother’s Little Helpers is a small Indie, dark‑comedy that leans heavily on its cast—both as performers and as co‑writers—and that shared ownership gives the film a genuine feel. The story kicks off when four estranged siblings return home to care for their dying hippie mother, Joy Pride (Melanie Hutsell).

The siblings themselves are a fascinating mix. Kestrin Pantera not only directs and co-writes but also stars as Sadie, bringing a grounded, quietly exasperated presence. Breeda Wool, the oldest sister Julia, ends up delivering the film’s strongest arc; she starts prickly and defensive but slowly becomes the emotional anchor. Sam Littlefield plays Jude, the house‑arrested brother with a strange, unsettling smile. His subplot—complete with parole‑officer check‑ins—feels overdeveloped compared to its relevance to the family story. And Milana Vayntrub, instantly recognizable as AT&T’s Lilly, plays the youngest sister Lucy, a new doctor whose character never gets the same depth as her siblings.

The Siblings – Sam, Sadie, Lucy & Julie

In Mother’s Little Helpers, flashbacks fill in the family’s messy history, especially Mom’s questionable parenting. This defines everyone, except Lucy, who remains more of a familiar persona than a fully fleshed‑out character.

The humor is sparse but genuinely funny when it lands. The running bit about Joy’s “fish‑breath” (her prolonged inspiratory hold) gets funnier each time, especially with Julia’s horrified reactions. Even the throwaway jokes—like the siblings roasting Julia’s clogs—feel authentically sibling‑ish.

Supporting characters are hit‑or‑miss. Cool Benson is memorable as Nurse Cool, a calm, steady presence who quietly reminds you how essential nurses are. Tara Karsian’s Auntie Trashcan has a fantastic name but never quite rises to the emotional weight her role carries.

Despite its unevenness, Mother’s Little Helpers ends on a strangely satisfying, straightforward note. It’s a sweet, slightly off‑kilter dark comedy about death, family, and the weird ways people come back together.
